Since 1980, Sitting Volleyball has been part of the Summer Paralympic Games programme. There were 7 teams in the 1980 Arnhem Games. These games were arranged, as there was a lack of cooperation between the International Stoke Mandeville Games Federation and Moscow, who hosted the 1980 Summer Olympic Games. In 1984, the Games were held in New York, with 8 teams. In the 1988 Seoul Games, there were 10 teams, and in there were 12 teams between 1992 and 2000.
In 2004, there were 8 Men’s teams, and 6 Women’s teams who played in Athens. Four years later at the Beijing 2008 Games, there were 16 teams, half of men and women. For the 2012 edition, there were two more teams in the men’s competition, but since then there have been 8 men’s and women’s teams at the games. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Tokyo games were postponed to 2021 and played without any spectators. The 2024 edition in Paris is a widely anticipated competition with a complex, yet exciting qualification route.
