In total 8 men and 8 women teams were participating at the sitting volleyball tournament. In the men’s tournament UKR and USA made their return at the Paralympic Games, while in the women’s tournament IRI, CAN and RWA made their debut. The women team of RUS should also made their Paralympic sitting volleyball debut, but because the IPC suspended the Russian NPC at the last minute, this debut unfortunately did not took place. Completely unexpectedly, the NED women team was able to participate, even though they had not qualified. In the men’s tournament UKR took over the place of the RUS men team.
The live stream of all the Sitting volleyball from the start was not possible. Only the last 3 days it was possible for the Paravolley community worldwide, to watch the sitting volleyball final matches live.
The finals in the men and women competition, where the same as the finals in 2008 and 2012. IRI men team was winning against BIH. The women team of USA became for the first time Paralympic Champion by beating CHN.

Tom is the official mascot of the 2016 Summer Paralympics. Created by animation company Birdo. Named after Antônio Carlos “Tom” Jobim, the co-writer of the song “The Girl from Ipanema”. Tom’s design represents the plants of Brazilian forests. Any object can be pulled out of the leaves on Tom’s head. His mission is “to inspire everybody to use creativity and determination to always reach further and have fun.”
